The Belgian detective receives an anonymous letter, simply signed ABC, which challenges him to solve a mystery that will occur later that month in Andover. At first it seems like a prank, but on the predicted day, Alice Ascher is murdered in the shop she owns in Andover. A second letter directing Poirot to Bexhill-on-Sea, confirms his suspicions that the Andover case was just the first in a series of alphabetically-arranged murders.
