In the 1920s, Agatha Christie listed her occupation as novelist, revealing that she had ambitions. Yet by the 1960s, she called herself a „married woman“ who just happened to achieve success by accident. What changed? This episode explores how Agatha Christie’s childhood and the upheavals of the First World War were crucial in shaping the kind of person she become. Worsley suggests that the young Agatha gradually developed a disdain and disenchantment with authority and established norms. In her early novels such as The Mysterious Affair at Styles and crucially in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, she proved willing to subvert expectations. The success of her novels gave her a reputation as „a clever woman“ (she bought „Styles House“, for example, in her own name–at a time when few women could afford to do so). She had become a woman in control of her own destiny. But society in the 1920s that was unready for such a concept and for Worsley this could explain why Agatha Christie later took pains to conceal her brilliance in plain sight.
